Apports des données de la 'couleur de l'eau' à la modélisation couplée physique-biogéochimie en milieu dynamique côtier : Application au Rio de la Plata et au Golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Huret, Martin.
Continental margins play a crucial role in biogeochemical fluxes between the continents and the open ocean. They are also highly sensitive to human perturbations. Primary production is highly dependent on the complex dynamics of these coastal zones, and on the river supply in nutrients, as well as in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) which limit light availability. The quantification of the production is a prerequisite in many applications, from the understanding of the role of the coastal ocean in climate change, to eutrophication and fisheries resources issues within the frame of the integrated management of the coastal zone. Coupled physical-biogeochemical models are useful in studying and monitoring primary production. Because of the numerous complex...

Hybrid hidden Markov model for marine environment monitoring ArchiMer
Rousseeuw, Kevin; Poison Caillault, Emilie; Lefebvre, Alain; Hamad, Denis.
Phytoplankton is an important indicator of water quality assessment. To understand phytoplankton dynamics, many fixed buoys and ferry boxes were implemented, resulting in the generation of substantial data signals. Collected data are used as inputs of an effective monitoring system. The system, based on unsupervised hidden Markov model (HMM), is designed not only to detect phytoplancton blooms but also to understand their dynamics. HMM parameters are usually estimated by an iterative expectation-maximization (EM) approach. We propose to estimate HMM parameters by using spectral clustering algorithm. The monitoring system is assessed based on database signals from MAREL-Carnot station, Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Experimental results show that the proposed...

L'eutrophisation des eaux marines et saumâtres en Europe, en particulier en France ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Aminot, Alain; Belin, Catherine; Chapelle, Annie; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Joanny, Michel; Lefebvre, Alain; Merceron, Michel; Piriou, Jean-yves; Souchu, Philippe.
In order to be able to count the cases of coastal eutrophication and to propose methods to monitor as well as to reduce these phenomena, first of all it is necessary to precisely define the word eutrophication itself. Instead of the strict etymological definition, that is to say a progression of the enrichment of a medium, we will rather retain the concept of a state enriched at a point such as it causes harmful effects on the ecosystem, and nuisances to man's activities. Based on the average chemical equations of the organic matter synthesis/degradation in the sea, this operational definition thus puts forwards the harmful consequences of enrichment, i.e. the production of an excessive algal biomass, sometimes unbalanced from the point of view of...

L'utilisation de modèles écologiques dans la lutte contre l'eutrophisation des eaux côtières françaises ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain.
Increasing anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus loadings in some coastal areas have induced during the last twenty years excessive production of algal material, either phytoplanktonic or macrophytic. This so-called eutrophication phenomenon alters the usual structure of ecosystem and can lead to massive kills caused by anoxia in some extreme cases, when almost all the dissolved oxygen in bottom waters has been consumed by organic matter decomposition. Just behind the semi-enclosed lagoons, the most sensible areas are the dilution plumes of main rivers. In the case of French coasts, mediterranean lagoons have been eutrophicated for a long time, whereas the coastal areas of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel have been partially preserved by the strong...

When do phytoplankton blooms cause the most intense hypoxia in the northern Adriatic Sea? ArchiMer
Legovic, T; Justic, D.
Eutrophication of the northern Adriatic Sea was investigated using data on dissolved oxygen (DO) from 1911 to 1982. Beginning in the period 1955-1965, DO concentrations increased in the surface layer and decreased close to the bottom in all seasons except winter. These changes are attributed to an increase of the anthropogenic nutrient inflow. The occurrence of hypoxia near the bottom and its disappearance were investigated using the vertical distribution of DO on the transect from the Po delta to Rovinj during 1973. Horizontal distributions of DO close to the surface and near the bottom show prominent gradients from the Po delta towards the middle of the northern Adriatic Sea. Application of a simple box model indicates that phytoplankton blooms which...
